Anchoring Tangaroa - NLP with Actors
Werner Meyer, Life Coach and Hypnotherapist
During pre-production of a German-NZ feature on a remote island, the young Maori lead finally met the young German love interest with literally ‘breathtaking’ results. He lost his composure, exhaled before every sentence, and ran out of breath before delivering his lines. A speech therapist was flown in with little result.
Watching him struggle to charm the young actress, I asked him to do a Haka right there and then. Stunned and confused, he took his stance. Immediately his posture was proud, his voice was firm and he was centred in himself. His nervous breathing pattern has gone and he was the self-confident young man the role demands. I anchored this state with the word ‘Haka’ and during the rest of rehearsal mentioned the ‘anchor’ two more times before his character was well and truly established.
The bewilderment of the young German actress, who had never seen a Haka before, was so endearing that it became the turning point in their budding attraction in the film. Today, they are both well established performers.
